Hyax: The AI-native Ghost Alternative

I had a chat with friend of the blog, Jack Paxton, the founder of Hyax, an AI-native Ghost alternative that he's recently launched into beta. I was able to get a free preview of the app in exchange for a full review.

First of all, I use Ghost currently. I like it. It's a pretty great platform.

But once I tried Hyax, I fell in love with it. It's gorgeous, simple to use, and has way more power than Ghost.

If you're shopping for a platform to publish content, build an audience, and maybe even monetize, you've probably come across Ghost. It's been the go-to alternative to WordPress for years, clean, fast, and built specifically for publishers. But there's a newer player worth your attention: Hyax.

Tldr: The website you're on today is currently published using Ghost, but I've decided that any future projects I will be swapping over to Hyax. It's an amazing platform.

While Ghost has earned its reputation as a solid publishing platform, Hyax takes a different approach. Instead of just giving you a place to publish, it's designed to be your entire business operating system: publishing, email marketing, monetization, SEO, analytics, and automation all working together in one place.

Keep in mind, I've actually used both platforms and I actually like both platforms a lot. We'll deep dive into the real pros and cons about each platform into this article.

Ghost was built with one clear mission: make publishing beautiful and simple. It strips away the bloat of WordPress and gives you a clean, focused environment for writing and sharing content. If you want to run a newsletter, publish blog posts, or offer paid memberships, Ghost handles that elegantly.

Hyax started with a similar anti-WordPress mission back in 2016, but evolved into something more ambitious. After pivoting through a link-in-bio phase (Hy.page), the team relaunched as Hyax 3.0 in 2026 with a broader vision: one platform where creators can publish, grow an audience, monetize, and run their entire business without stitching together a dozen different tools.

The difference in philosophy shows up everywhere. Ghost gives you a publishing platform that plays nicely with other tools. Hyax tries to be all those other tools.

Ghost vs Hyax: Design

This is the one spot I feel like Ghost does shine. They have a full template library as well as paid templates you can buy. Hyax has a pre-set list of templates with no purchaseable additional templates.

Hyax does have a landing page creator, but that's not quite as nice as having a template already done for you.

This is the one spot where I do think Ghost has an edge. If the templates and landing page creation work for you in Hyax, then go with Hyax. Otherwise if you really want more choice, Ghost has some really good templates.

Ghost vs Hyax: Publishing and Content Creation

Ghost's Editor

Ghost's editor is clean, distraction-free, and built for writers. You get a card-based system where you can add text, images, galleries, embeds, and more. It's intuitive, fast, and stays out of your way. The focus is on creating beautiful content without wrestling with the interface.

Ghost also supports multiple authors, custom post types, and tags for organizing content. It's everything you need for straightforward publishing, but nothing you don't.

Hyax's AI-Powered Approach

Hyax includes a full-featured editor too, but adds something Ghost doesn't: AI assistance baked into every page. Need to write a post about building an email list but stuck on what angle to take? Hyax plugs into SEO data, extracts topics, and writes your first draft using models like Claude Opus, GPT, and Sonnet.

The platform has full context of your help desk and previous articles, so when you're expanding content, it can pull real information from what you've already written. There's an AI assistant available on every page to help you add content that's rooted in your actual business context.

You can even automate content research. I set up a workflow to "research 10 unique articles my competitors are writing about" and then write similar pieces with your own perspective. Of course, you'll want human review to make sure posts don't read like AI slop, but the first pass can be handled automatically.

Funny enough, I connected Hyax into this Ghost blog to do my research and publishing. They have a Ghost integration so that you can easily move posts out of Hyax into Ghost or vice versa.

Why'd they add a Ghost integration?

Jack Paxton: We found that a lot of our users like to use us for the automations and email marketing, not just CMS. Some people don't want to migrate off Ghost for whatever reason. We just make it easy to operate their business, whether they're on Ghost or not.

Which one has better SEO and Discoverability, Ghost or Hyax?

Ghost's SEO Features

Ghost gives you the fundamentals: meta titles, descriptions, custom URLs, structured data, and clean semantic HTML. It's built to be fast and lightweight, which Google loves. You can also integrate with Google Search Console and other SEO tools, but you're mostly managing optimization manually.

Hyax's Integrated SEO and GEO / AEO

Hyax takes SEO further by building it directly into the platform. Plug in your Google Search Console and immediately see action items you can take to generate better content. Those insights feed directly into Hyax's AI writing tools.

The platform also supports programmatic SEO, the kind of automated content generation that big companies like Yelp use to create hundreds of unique, targeted articles. With AI handling the heavy lifting, you can scale your content production while still maintaining quality through human review.

How does Hyax do programmatic exactly?

You can either use automations to create blog posts OR landing pages. I thought the landing page builder was really useful. Sometimes you need charts, data, formatting that doesn't fit into a blog post. Hyax lets you do that.

Hyax also focuses on AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) also called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), helping your content show up in AI-powered search results and featured snippets.

Does Hyax or Ghost have better email marketing?

Ghost's Built-In Newsletter

Ghost has native email built in. You can send newsletters to your subscribers, segment your audience, and even offer paid email subscriptions. It's clean and straightforward, but the features are fairly basic compared to dedicated email platforms like ConvertKit or Mailchimp.

For many creators, Ghost's email tools are enough. But if you want advanced automation, detailed segmentation, or complex funnel building, you'll probably need to integrate a third-party service.

Hyax's Full Email Marketing Suite

Hyax includes a complete email marketing system: newsletters, sequences, signup forms, popups, content upgrades, and landing pages. Write a blog post and Hyax can help you turn it into an email campaign, using AI to draft the message for you.

The platform also lets you turn one piece of content into an entire funnel: create a lead magnet PDF, an email sequence, social posts, and a landing page all from a single article. Most creators write great content and let it sit there. Hyax helps you build a complete customer journey around each piece you publish.

There's even a feature that scans your help desk, identifies common questions, and suggests blog posts or email sequences to answer them at scale. Instead of answering "How do I set up my domain?" 50 times, you write it once and distribute it everywhere your audience needs it.

Ghost offers native paid memberships and subscriptions through Stripe. You can create free and paid tiers, lock content behind a paywall, and manage recurring revenue. It's a solid system if your business model is straightforward: publish content, charge for access.

However, if you want to sell digital products, courses, or one-time purchases, Ghost doesn't handle that natively. You'd need to integrate Gumroad, Podia, or another platform.

Hyax's All-in-One Commerce

Hyax handles memberships, digital products, courses, and one-time payments all in one place. You don't need Gumroad for products, ConvertKit for emails, Memberful for subscriptions, and Stripe for payments. Hyax does it all.

Create a digital product, set a price, add it to a post or landing page, and start selling. Want members-only content? Just assign a plan to a post. Want to upsell a course after someone joins your email list? Set up an automation.

Since Hyax is content-first, you can see exactly which piece of content is driving revenue — something that's harder to track when your monetization lives in separate tools.

Ghost vs Hyax: Analytics and Insights

Ghost's Analytics

Ghost provides basic analytics: post views, member signups, and email open rates. It's helpful for understanding your audience at a high level, but if you want deeper insights, you'll need to integrate Google Analytics or another analytics platform.

Hyax's Unified Dashboard

Hyax shows you your entire business in one dashboard: traffic, revenue, popular content, subscriber growth, and conversion metrics. You can see which posts are driving signups, which emails are converting to sales, and which pages people are bouncing from.

No more logging into five different tools to figure out what's happening. Everything is visible in one place because everything lives in one platform.

Ghost's Integration Approach

Ghost doesn't have native automation beyond basic email triggers. If you want advanced workflows, you'll use Zapier or Make to connect Ghost with other tools. This works, but it adds complexity and cost.

Hyax's Built-In Automations

Hyax includes automation as a core feature. You can trigger follow-ups when someone reads a post, makes a purchase, or joins your list. The platform can automate content research, social posting, email sequences, and more.

Because everything is in one system, automations can touch every part of your business without needing middleware like Zapier.

Ghost offers two options: Ghost(Pro), their managed hosting starting at $11/month for up to 500 members, or self-hosting the open-source version on your own server (which requires technical knowledge).

As your audience grows, Ghost(Pro) pricing scales up. At 1,000 members you're paying $31/month, and at 10,000 members it's $249/month. These prices include hosting, email sending, and support.

Hyax Pricing

Hyax operates as a complete SaaS platform with pricing that reflects its broader feature set. Since it's still in active development (Hyax 3.0 launched in beta in 2026), pricing tiers are evolving, but the value proposition is different: you're replacing multiple tools, not just a publishing platform.

There's no self-hosting option with Hyax, it's fully managed, which means less technical overhead but also less control over your infrastructure.

Technical Control and Customization

Ghost's Flexibility

Ghost is open source, which means you can customize everything if you're willing to dig into code. The theming system uses Handlebars templates, and you have complete control over your site's design and functionality.

If you self-host, you control your data, your server, and your destiny. If you use Ghost(Pro), you get a managed experience but still have access to themes and integrations.

Hyax's Managed Approach

Hyax is a closed, managed platform. You can customize your site's look, navigation, and branding through the interface, but you don't have access to the underlying code or infrastructure.

This is a trade-off: less control, but also less maintenance. You're not managing servers, updating software, or troubleshooting technical issues. The platform handles it for you.

Migration and Getting Started

Moving to Ghost

Ghost makes it relatively easy to migrate from WordPress, Medium, and other platforms. There are official migration tools and plenty of documentation. If you're self-hosting, you'll need some technical chops to get everything set up properly.

Starting with Hyax

Hyax 3.0 is designed to be straightforward to set up. If you had a previous Hyax or Hy.page account, you can migrate by using the password reset at platform.hyax.com with your original email.

Because Hyax is still in beta, expect things to change, some features to evolve, and improvements to happen quickly. The team is transparent about this and actively seeking user feedback.

Who Should Choose Ghost?

Ghost is the better choice if you:

• Want a focused, distraction-free publishing experience
• Value open-source software and technical control
• Have a simple business model (publish content, maybe offer memberships)
• Prefer best-of-breed tools and don't mind managing integrations
• Want a proven, stable platform with years of development behind it
• Are comfortable with some technical setup (especially if self-hosting)

Hyax is the better choice if you:

The Bottom Line

Ghost and Hyax are both solid alternatives to WordPress, but they're solving different problems.

Ghost is a mature, focused publishing platform that does one thing exceptionally well: help you create and share content. It's elegant, fast, and gives you control. If you want a clean publishing experience and you're happy integrating other tools for email, products, and automation, Ghost is an excellent choice.

Hyax is an ambitious all-in-one platform that wants to be your entire business operating system. It combines publishing with AI-powered content creation, email marketing, monetization, SEO tools, analytics, and automation. If you're tired of managing a stack of different tools and want everything working together in one place, Hyax is worth exploring.

Neither platform is objectively better, it depends on what you're building and how you want to work. Ghost gives you simplicity and control. Hyax gives you breadth and integration.

The good news? Both platforms are light-years ahead of WordPress, and either one will give you a faster, cleaner, more modern foundation for your online business.
