Beehiiv panics as Marc Lou vibe-codes his own software

Email marketing startup Beehiiv gets into a panic on X, as Marc Lou debuts his own app, MailCheap.ai.

Marc Lou got tired of his Beehiiv bill, so he built his own.

On October 3, Marc Lou posted a tweet saying Beehiiv keeps increasing its prices every year, that he felt ripped off as a customer, and that he was churning.

He didn’t just leave. He vibe-coded his own newsletter platform with campaign management, web archives, API support, and list cleanup, and said it took a few prompts with Opus 5.5.

His reason was the numbers. His first yearly bill was $1,000, and his next one would have been $4,000.

A week later, on Oct 10, he open-sourced it as MailCheap, self-hosted newsletters on Amazon SES at about $0.10 per 1,000 emails. Now there’s a hosted version at MailCheap.ai, and its whole pitch is aimed straight at Beehiiv. It claims that at 4,000 subscribers sending one email a week, it costs $19 on MailCheap Starter versus $109 on Beehiiv Lite. The selling point: you pay for the emails you send, not for dormant subscribers. There’s even a one-minute import from Beehiiv, Substack or Mailchimp.

Beehiiv’s response:

The bigger story: when an AI-assisted solo builder can replace your product in a weekend, pricing power gets fragile. Others are noticing. One Moosend co-founder pointed to Marc’s move as a sign people are walking away from that kind of platform, and is building tooling on top of SES and SendGrid. startuptalky

It’s early. MailCheap shows $39 in verified monthly revenue so far. But with 410.7k followers on X watching, Beehiiv is right to take it seriously.

If you're in the market for a Beehiiv alternative, we recommend Hyax, its the best in the business - you bring your own API key on Resend and get as many emails as you want.
